    Aww my partner and I took this train from and to Stockholm last year so we could bring our dog with us on holidays comfortably instead of taking the plane. So a big plus is that you can travel in this train with your pet, the only condition is that you need to book the whole cabin (just like you did) for you, no matter the size of your party. There was a special code we were able to use to reduce the price of the cabin, something hidden in their website and related to travelling with a pet, but I can't remember what it was exactly. Overall it was quite comfortable, the dog had time to do lil pee breaks whenever the train stopped. We bought a lot of snacks and drinks and just enjoyed the ride, staring at the beautiful view :) (super nice to see you in Europe, I started following this channel last year to help me plan my trip to New Zealand and your advice helped a lot, we had the time of our life in NZ earlier this year :D )

    One of the nicer train cabins and overnight trains I've seen. I'm not at all claustrophobic so its relatively small size seemed perfectly fine to me, along with the really cute and efficient bathroom with shower (actually gives me some ideas for a camper van I've been building in my imagination). Plus something about train travel in winter with snow all around and everything lifeless and frozen just seems right. In summer there's this urge to stop the train and get out at every turn, especially on more scenic routes. But in winter it's so cold and desolate that you feel lucky to be inside all snug and warm. I've traveled by train in both seasons and think I prefer winter. Of course it was in the Rockies and Cascades, which helps.

      @@chloeandludvig If you like street food, maybe you tried the ”tunnbrödsrulle”. It’s very popular but endemic to Sweden. I knew the guy who invented it. His kiosk, Loffes Grill, was close to where I grew up in a Stockholm suburb. One day came someone and ordered something for which he didn’t have the ingredients. Unwilling to lose a customer, he improvised and used what he had and the customer was quite happy so it became a new dish. When Anthony Bourdain visited Sweden he tried one but not from Loffe. You can find videos on the tunnbrödsrulle on youtube.

      This old wives tale has been told about various navies at different times. It's somewhat ironic that the version with the ship being Russian became the most common one as it is entirely implausible. The Russian navy has only been allowed to visit once, and that was much, much more recent than the this tall tale.

The coaches in themselves seem to be of the same quality as when I travelled around on a euro train card in 1974. Oh, and if one can afford it, definitely a private compartment, but ideally not like the one here which is basically a 6 person compartment that has seats during the day and couchettes at night, only all to yourself. Rather, one with at least a wash basin and hopefully an en suite bathroom with toilet and shower, meaning a real sleeping compartment. I mean if you're going to splurge and spend close to $500, you should get all that for it. In this situation I probably would have gone for a regular couchette because that IS a lot of money to spend just to have a couchette compartment for yourself--all the more so given that they attendant didn't even make up the bed. But I have no idea what deluxe compartments cost on overnight trips in Europe these days. They're a small fortune here in the US and no way could I afford one these days.

    • @chloeandludvig
      @chloeandludvig 2 дня назад

      Yeah, when booking it doesn’t really seem to specify that I was booking a six person room but for myself… it just says ‘private compartment’… it would definitely be more affordable with a group! but it was fun to try something new 😁

    • @kovie9162
      @kovie9162 2 дня назад

      @@chloeandludvig Oh for sure. I've been lucky enough to find empty 6 person compartments on overnight trains without having had to book them and pay extra, but with no bedding (note to my 20-something year old self: bring bedding!), but had I known that this was a "sleeping compartment", I doubt that I would have paid this much. Apparently the train you took only had these but there was another one that had proper sleepers like in the Santa Claus train. Live and learn!

    As a Swede, having to reserve a table in the restaurant car is a huge culture shock to me. Never heard about that practice before, and it's definitely not the norm... I know that some SJ-trains in Sweden require you to book meals in advance if you want to be served a warm meal by your seat in first class (on trainrides up to about 3 hours travel time), but never having to pre-book seats in restaurant cars on longer routes.

    Hey Chloe! This was a fun, and informative, but also puzzling vid. So nice to see an old-school train car still doing good service (though, another commenter, 57thorns, did an excellent assessment of your not a/c probs to which I would only add that a multi-lingual sticker (saying, "no A/C, only heat -- open the flerkin' window!) would have been helpful?) And the whole dining car thing IS ON THEM! They did NOT seem to include this MOST important page 1, but was on a later page? Not your fault. And I thought it was telling that you had to take a nap halfway through deploying your bunk!😂 The reason bunks are deployed by stewards in North America and elsewhere is that if you accidentally crush a finger, or fall out of an improperly set-up bunk -- it, esprin the US, would lead to mucho dinero in injury compensation. Apparently, the Scando-Germanics are employing a "Midsommar" style of self-survival?🤔 Still loved the trip and the vid, and Ludwig would have been sardined in one of those bunks!💕

    I love overnight trains, so long as, of course, I have a lie flat sleep situation. The only two downsides to it are that it can be hard to fall and stay asleep and get a good night's sleep, and you miss all the scenery you pass through at night, assuming that there is any as some routes are pretty ordinary. Otherwise, there's nothing quite like an overnight train--especially if you have your own compartment, even better if it has an en suite!

      They are great aren't they... and yes, gotta have your own compartment I say ;) Although pricey!

      @@chloeandludvig Yes, very pricey, but so nice. Years ago I got my employer to pay for most of a cross-country train trip across the US, 7 nights, all in compartments, 3 meals a day. It was technically a business trip and I had lots of vacation time left. Damn that was nice.
